Trend confirmation versus noise

Breakouts and Chop

Breakout rules look for price clearing a recent range. Chop filters look for price movement that is too inefficient or too compressed to trust.

Key Ideas

  • A breakout above a prior high can confirm that buyers are pushing beyond recent resistance.
  • A breakdown below a prior low can confirm that sellers are pushing beyond recent support.
  • Efficiency ratio compares net price change with the total path traveled; low efficiency often means chop.

Common Uses

TQQQ Breakout requires trend alignment and a breakout before switching into TQQQ or SQQQ.
The same strategy parks in BSV when the efficiency ratio is low or the EMA gap is too narrow.
Other TQQQ strategies use short-term moving-average reclaim rules as a simpler trend confirmation.

Examples

TQQQ above prior 20-day high

If EMA trend and slope agree, the breakout strategy can rotate into TQQQ.

ER(10) below the chop threshold

The strategy avoids directional bets and moves to BSV.

Watch For

  • Breakouts can fail quickly when price clears a level and then reverses.
  • Chop filters can keep the strategy defensive during early parts of a new trend.
  • Breakout logic works best when paired with a clear exit or defensive rule.
